Ictinus provides orthodontic diagnosis, treatment planning and custom-made aligner manufacturing to dental practices across Europe. Every case is read, planned and signed by a specialist orthodontist. Cases that belong in specialist hands are returned with a referral, not a workaround.

01 — Position

Orthodontics is a speciality. We are not here to change that.

The diagnosis belongs to a specialist.
Records are assessed by a qualified orthodontist — skeletal pattern, soft tissue, airway, periodontal condition, root anatomy. No plan leaves this office without that assessment behind it.
A referral is a valid outcome.
A meaningful share of submitted cases are not suitable for aligner therapy in a general practice. We say so, in writing, and we say what the case actually needs. Turning work away is part of the service, not a failure of it.
Scope of practice is the clinician's own.
We supply a specialist plan and a manufactured device on prescription. What each practitioner undertakes chairside is determined by their qualifications and by the regulations of their jurisdiction — not by us, and not by a software licence.
Orthodontists are colleagues, not competition.
Specialist practices use Ictinus for digital planning capacity and in-house printing without buying a production line. The same infrastructure, offered to whoever needs it.

Assessment
An orthodontist's reading of the case: skeletal pattern, soft tissue profile, periodontal status, indication limits — and a clear statement of what aligner therapy can and cannot achieve here.

Treatment plan
Digital planning of every movement, with aligner count, staging, estimated duration, checkpoints and planned attachments. You review and approve it before anything is printed.

Manufacture
Aligners printed directly in shape-memory resin. No thermoforming and no intermediate model, giving more consistent force delivery across the arch and tighter dimensional control.

Documentation
An Annex XIII statement under the MDR for each patient, with material traceability by batch. The file exists before the device is delivered — it is not assembled afterwards.

Continuity
Access to the planning orthodontist through the course of treatment, and a refinement when the clinical picture diverges from the plan. Divergence is expected; leaving it unaddressed is not.

04 — Regulatory

The part that rarely gets explained.

A custom-made device carries a file, not a CE mark.

An aligner manufactured for one identified patient, on the written prescription of a clinician, is a custom-made device under Regulation (EU) 2017/745. It does not bear CE marking. It is accompanied by an Annex XIII statement, issued per patient and retained by the manufacturer.

This is not paperwork for lawyers. It is the point at which responsibility is defined — and the reason every order we produce leaves a documented trail behind it.

We are not your clinic. We are the planning behind it.

Ictinus does not see patients and does not book appointments. We work with your clinician: they examine you, take the records and look after you chairside, while the orthodontic diagnosis, the treatment plan and the manufacture of the aligners are handled here by a specialist.

What that gives you is straightforward — you stay with the practice you know, and the plan behind your treatment is written by an orthodontist rather than generated automatically.

One thing worth knowing: not every case is suited to clear aligners, and some belong with a specialist from the start. When that is true we say so, and your clinician will refer you. A plan that admits its own limits is worth more than one that promises everything.
